I'm having an issue just with this problem, the excelsior problem. If I make a move such as Rc5, which is anticipated by the designer, I get an immediate response. If I make an unanticipated move, though, I get no response, not even a "thinking" box.
My understanding, based just upon playing so far, is that unanticipated moves in a "mate in X" problem are turned over to a chess computer to play it out for the user's edification, because that's possible here where it isn't in the Go world.
If that's correct, then it seems like that hook isn't getting invoked, but just for this problem (for me).
cheers,

The applet also doesn't respond for me to some unanticpiated moves with any kind of thinking box or a move either. An example is 1b3.
This also happens with some other problems.
Adum, I think it's because as you said before it really isn't designed to handle mate in 5's for moves that aren't anticipated.
It's curious that it doesn't give any kind of response though.

If you make a king move for problem 236, you don't get a response either. It is also a mate in 5. I will have to try a mate in 4 and see what happens.

It also does it for mate in 4's. For 233, 1K any legal move, there is no response. Sounds like a big bug.

i'll have to take a look at this. i think it's trying to start by calculating an estimation of how long it's going to take to do the whole thing, and sometimes just making the estimate takes too long if it's a mate in > 3.

That makes sense since I haven't been able to get it to happen with any mate in 3 problems.
