I just submitted a Selfmate problem that I expect to be rated 500. The engine tries to play black well, so if it is selfmate in 2, you can play almost anything and be mated in 2 provided you don't exchange the mating pieces. There should be some type of option in create a problem where you choose to have the engine avoid mating. The only current work around is to program in every single move in the tree.

Yes and the same applies for Helpmates too. Here both parties co-operate to produce mate. Normally black starts.

The applet is not really geared to handle Self- and Helpmates Confused
