Today and yesterday I have tried to add a puzzle, but the "Add a problem" - applet did not open. I have only been told to read the instructions Very Happy - which in itself is good of course...

Is there something wrong with the server or is my browser / Norton security to blaim? I can get to normal problems fine.

Hi Adum,

Something funny is going on. When i select Home or problems or Forum everything seems to work normally. My username and option 'Logout' appear on the right upper corner (Except Forum, when i see myself as a registered user in the text as always).

However, when i select "Add a problem", i see the text "You must be logged in when adding a problem", and there appears small red crosses in the username/Logout corner!

This suggests that Add a problem is handled differently from other selections or my username is somehow corrupted in the 'problem-Adders' database??

An update:

Now it seems that 'You must log in ...' prompt only comes occasionally.
However still the add problem-applet does not run, nor can i edit my ownn or anyone else's puzzles.
Normal solving applet runs just fine.

I have also noticed that noone has added problems for some time, true??

Update #2:
You were right Adum, the problem was with my browser - But not to worry, it will be your problem soon as well Wink
I upgraded to IE7 (Beta 2) browser recently and then this problem (= I am able to view and solve problems, but not add/edit them) popped up.
Using IE6, Netscape 8 or Firefox 1.5 everything works fine -but not with new IE7.

First I thought that it might be some new security feature that prevents the applet from running, but this seems unlikely as the same applet runs fine, when solving.

Is there anybody else, who might confirm this behaviour:
Using new IE7 browser you cannot add or edit problems, but can solve the existing ones. True or False?

Amen to that!
I tried to compare the client side script for solving, adding and editing modes and notised two differences:

- In solving mode the applet runs inside a table with given dimensions, while in edit/add the applet runs just inside body-element (without dims). Now i suspect the new security model for IE7 does not accept 'zero dimension' windows or frames. What about applets?

-The parameter Session has a value in solving mode, but is empty/null in add/edit-mode.

When I clear the board, both kings remain in it. How can I move them to the positions required by my new problem?
Laughing Thanks

Tomas,

Add another piece or pawn in your puzzle (I am boldly assuming there is one Smile ) on the board. Then you can drag the kings and other pieces around.

Tomas and other new puzzle setters.

Please do read the instructions for setting up the problems. Specifically note:
- If it is mate_in_x type, supply x in the required field. Else supply a description on the header field.

- Give at least one correct move path to solution and click on the green circle button to confirm this to applet. The path color will change from red to green.

- Only then submit the problem.

I have corrected problems #342 and #344 as above, but would prefer the setters do it themselves. Rolling Eyes

Thanks for these nice puzzles, though...

Update #3.

I have upgraded to IE7 (Beta3), but the same continues: Cannot edit or add a problem. (With IE6 and others this works fine).

Another curious fact with IE7: When solving a puzzle or adding a comment, I need to click the applet once in order to 'activate' it Smile .

Still no-one else has confirmed similar behavior? Am I the only one using IE7 here?

I can confirm that
1) editing a problem only gives the instructions with IE 7.0.5730.11. I didn't have the problem till after I went to IE 7.0
2) trying to add a problem does the same.

Update #4

After downloading an installing Java Runtime Environment version 1.6.0
The add/edit is possible again Smile

My IE7 version is not changed (7.0.5730.11)
So all is well now. Still need to click to "activate" applet.
